The ride begins on the Main Market Square (Rynek Główny), the largest preserved medieval square in Europe, laid out in 1257. Around it stand St Mary's Basilica, famous for its wooden altarpiece by Veit Stoss and the hourly trumpet call (hejnal) that breaks off mid-note, and the Cloth Hall (Sukiennice), a Renaissance trading hall still full of market stalls. From there the cart slips into streets where cars cannot follow.

You pass Collegium Maius, the oldest building of the Jagiellonian University (founded in 1364), where Nicolaus Copernicus once studied, then roll along the Royal Route toward Wawel Hill. Wawel Royal Castle and Cathedral were the seat of Polish kings for more than five centuries, the place where they were crowned and buried. In the cathedral Karol Wojtyla served as Archbishop of Kraków before he became Pope John Paul II in 1978, one of several places on the route tied to his life in the city.

Along the way your guide points out the museum that holds Leonardo da Vinci's Lady with an Ermine, one of fewer than twenty surviving paintings by the master and the most valuable artwork in Poland. Kazimierz was founded as a separate town in 1335, and for centuries Jewish and Catholic Kraków lived side by side here. The tour visits the heart of Jewish Kazimierz, where seven synagogues still stand. The Old Synagogue (15th century) is the oldest surviving synagogue in Poland and now a museum, the Remuh Synagogue holds the country's most important Jewish cemetery with tombstones from the 16th century, and the Tempel Synagogue of 1862 is the most ornate.

You roll through Szeroka, Józefa and Meiselsa streets, where Steven Spielberg filmed much of Schindler's List in 1993, and past Plac Nowy with its round market hall (the okraglak) and famous zapiekanka stalls. Your guide also shows the Catholic side of the district, a reminder that Kazimierz was always two communities in one town.

Today Kazimierz is also the craft-beer and cafe capital of Kraków, full of vintage shops and jazz clubs, so the ride tells both the deep history and the living present of the quarter.

From March 1941 to March 1943 more than 15,000 Jews were forced into a small part of Podgórze that had housed 3,000 people. The tour passes surviving fragments of the ghetto wall on Lwowska and Limanowskiego streets, deliberately built in the shape of Jewish tombstones, and stops at Ghetto Heroes Square (Plac Bohaterów Getta), where 70 empty steel chairs stand as a memorial.

You see the Eagle Pharmacy (Apteka pod Orlem) run by Tadeusz Pankiewicz, the only non-Jewish resident who chose to stay in the ghetto and helped many survive, and the exterior of Schindler's Factory, where Oskar Schindler saved more than 1,200 Jewish workers and which is now a museum of Nazi-occupied Kraków.

It is a sober, moving route, told with care by a licensed local guide, and a shorter alternative to the full Memory Trail for visitors who are short on time.

The historic core of Krakow was built in the 13th century, long before cars existed, and most streets are narrow, paved with cobblestones or designated as pedestrian zones. A standard tour bus cannot enter the Krakow Old Town. A taxi can only drop you at the edge of the historic area. Krakow was founded around 700 AD where the Wawel cliffs meet the Vistula. It became the capital of Poland in 1038 and the royal seat until 1596 when King Sigismund III Vasa moved the capital to Warsaw. The Krakow Old Town and Kazimierz survived World War II almost intact because the Nazi governor Hans Frank made Krakow the capital of the General Government and did not order its destruction. Sadly the Jewish community did not survive. Of about 70,000 Jews living in Krakow in 1939, only a few thousand were alive in 1945. The wartime Krakow Ghetto in Podgórze, Schindler's Factory and the Memory Trail tell that story. The Krakow Old Town and Kazimierz were placed on the very first UNESCO World Heritage List in 1978, one of only 12 sites worldwide in that inaugural year.

Kraków's Old Town has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1978 and is protected as a cultural park (Park Kulturowy Stare Miasto). To keep it safe and quiet, the historic core is a restricted-traffic zone: at every entrance there is a No Entry sign, and ordinary cars and large tour buses are not allowed inside.

Electric carts are the exception. Under Poland's electromobility law and Kraków's clean-transport rules, zero-emission vehicles can be authorised where combustion engines cannot. Licensed operators drive a set of designated streets under a limited number of city permits, so the carts stay few, quiet and emission-free. The word melex comes from Mielec, a town in south-eastern Poland known for its aircraft factory. Around 1970 a Polish-born engineer, Stan Siedlecki, had the idea of building an affordable electric golf cart there and selling it abroad. He wrote MELEX on a napkin, a name derived from Mielec, and the brand was born.

The little electric carts became a real export hit: the first ten units were shipped to the United States in December 1970, and full production ramped up in 1971 at the WSK PZL-Mielec aircraft works. By 1977 more than 46,000 had been built, around 10,000 a year. Melex became a separate company in 1993, was bought by the Danish maker Garia in 2021, and joined America's Club Car in 2022.

Yes, both are included at no extra cost. When you book on WhatsApp let us know the name and address of your hotel (or apartment), we agree a pickup time and the cart waits for you at the entrance. After the tour the guide drops you off at the same hotel, a restaurant, Wawel, Schindler's Factory, the train station or any address you choose in the central districts.
