Krakow Old Town Electric Cart Tour
The Old Town electric cart tour is the fastest, most comfortable way to see the medieval core of Krakow. In about 40 minutes you glide from the Main Market Square, the largest preserved medieval square in Europe, laid out in 1257, to the foot of Wawel Hill, past landmarks that would take half a day to reach on foot. Because the cart is small, electric and allowed into streets where cars and coaches are banned, you see everything from a few metres away instead of a distant car park.
Along the Royal Route your licensed guide brings the city to life: St Mary's Basilica with its Veit Stoss altarpiece and the hourly hejnal trumpet call, the Renaissance Cloth Hall, Collegium Maius where Copernicus studied, and Wawel Royal Castle and Cathedral, seat of Polish kings for five centuries and where Karol Wojtyla served before becoming Pope John Paul II. You will also pass the museum that holds Leonardo da Vinci's Lady with an Ermine, the most valuable painting in Poland.
From your seat the streets of the Old Town pass at walking pace, close enough to read the shop signs and notice the carved doorways. The cart hums along quietly, so you hear the pigeons, the horse hooves and the murmur of the square. The guide eases off before each landmark, turns around to tell its story, then rolls gently on to the next.
Listen for the hejnal from the taller tower of St Mary's: the trumpet call stops abruptly in mid note, and legend says it honours a medieval trumpeter struck by a Tatar arrow while sounding the alarm. A few dozen metres from the route hangs Leonardo da Vinci's Lady with an Ermine, and the guide will point out exactly where to find her later.

Why electric carts can drive inside Kraków's Old Town
Kraków's Old Town has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1978 and is protected as a cultural park (Park Kulturowy Stare Miasto). To keep it safe and quiet, the historic core is a restricted-traffic zone: at every entrance there is a No Entry sign, and ordinary cars and large tour buses are not allowed inside.
Electric carts are the exception. Under Poland's electromobility law and Kraków's clean-transport rules, zero-emission vehicles can be authorised where combustion engines cannot. Licensed operators drive a set of designated streets under a limited number of city permits, so the carts stay few, quiet and emission-free. A tour bus cannot fit or enter, and a taxi is turned away at the signs.
That is why an electric cart gets you closer to the sights than any other vehicle: right up to the Main Market Square, along the foot of Wawel Hill and through the narrow lanes of Kazimierz. You see the landmarks from a few metres away, not from a car park out on the ring road.
The story
The history of Melex, Poland's electric cart
The word melex comes from Mielec, a town in south-eastern Poland known for its aircraft factory. Around 1970 a Polish-born engineer, Stan Siedlecki, had the idea of building an affordable electric golf cart there and selling it abroad. He wrote MELEX on a napkin, a name derived from Mielec, and the brand was born.
The little electric carts became a real export hit: the first ten units were shipped to the United States in December 1970, and full production ramped up in 1971 at the WSK PZL-Mielec aircraft works. By 1977 more than 46,000 had been built, around 10,000 a year. Melex became a separate company in 1993, was bought by the Danish maker Garia in 2021, and joined America's Club Car in 2022.
Because Melex dominated the market for so long, Poles now call almost any small electric passenger cart a melex, whatever brand it really is, the same way one brand name can come to mean a whole product.
