Kraków Christmas Market 2026: Dates, Opening Hours, Prices, Nativity Scenes

By:

The Kraków Christmas market 2026 on the Main Market Square is planned from 27 November 2026 to 3 or 6 January 2027 (the organiser gives both dates), and the organiser's rules for traders set stall hours at 10:00 to 20:00. In December the sun sets at about 15:40, so from late afternoon you get the market after dark, with time to spare before the stalls close. If you would rather see it sitting down and warm, our private electric cart tour of the Old Town passes the market in December and takes about 40 minutes, with hotel pickup in central Kraków. The cart has a roof and side curtains, and we turn the heating on when it is cold. In the current promotion it costs 209 PLN per person (regular price 299 PLN).

Kraków Christmas market 2026 at a glance

  • Dates: planned from 27 November 2026 to 3 January 2027, or to 6 January 2027; last season it ran from 28 November 2025 to 1 January 2026.
  • Hours: stalls open from 10:00 to 20:00 under the organiser's rules for traders, and may trade later by agreement, until midnight at the latest.
  • Food: in 2025 the Polish Press Agency (PAP) reported żurek at 35 PLN and a small mulled wine at 35 PLN.
  • Szopka contest: Thursday 3 December 2026 from 10:00 at the Adam Mickiewicz monument; the exhibition runs from 9 December 2026 to 28 February 2027.
  • Two more fairs: Mały Rynek from 30 November 2026 to 6 January 2027, and St Mary Magdalene Square from 30 November 2026 to 3 January 2027.
  • Christmas: the Wieliczka Salt Mine is closed on 24 and 25 December 2026 and open on 26 and 31 December; the Auschwitz-Birkenau Museum is closed on 25 December and 1 January.

We checked dates and hours with the organisers, the city and the museums on 23 October 2026, and our own prices on 24 October 2026.

What are the Kraków Christmas market 2026 dates?

The market on the Main Market Square is planned from 27 November 2026 to 3 January 2027, or to 6 January 2027. Both end dates come from the organiser, and the city's Karta Krakowska residents' card scheme lists the market from 27 November 2026 to 6 January 2027.

The market is run by the Kraków Merchant Congregation (Krakowska Kongregacja Kupiecka), a traders' association, with the company Artim. The organiser describes it as an Advent market and a return to the trading traditions of the Main Market Square. Last season it ran from 28 November 2025 to 1 January 2026, with the opening ceremony on Saturday 29 November at 12:00, so if your trip falls between 4 and 6 January, check the end date on kiermasze.com.pl once the market opens.

Last season the stalls stood on the side of the square by the Town Hall Tower: 105 kiosks with food and gifts, run by traders from across Poland and from Lithuania, Ukraine, Slovakia and Hungary. More than 600 live Christmas trees decorated the market, and Lesser Poland's municipalities presented themselves on the stage and promoted their regional products at a stand near it. The city notes that The Times and CNN have recommended the market among Europe's Christmas fairs. For the square itself, see our page on the Main Market Square.

What are the Kraków Christmas market opening hours?

Under the organiser's 2026 rules for traders, the stalls open from 10:00 to 20:00, and stallholders may trade outside those hours by agreement with the organiser, until midnight at the latest. These are rules for stallholders rather than hours announced for visitors, so some stalls may close at 20:00 and others later.

You will see "food until 22:00" on many travel sites; the organiser does not say so, so do not plan a late dinner around it. A better plan is to arrive in the afternoon: on 1 December 2026 the sun sets at 15:41, on 21 December at 15:40 and on 31 December at 15:47, which gives you several hours of the market after dark before 20:00.

The evening is also when the cold gets to you. If you would like to see the lit-up Old Town without a long walk, our Old Town electric cart tour takes only your group from the Main Market Square to the foot of Wawel, with a local guide at the wheel; you pay after the ride, with no deposit. Other routes, including Kazimierz, are on our electric cart tours page.

Is the Kraków Christmas market open on Christmas Day?

The organiser and the city have not said whether the stalls open on 24, 25 or 26 December or on 1 January, so do not build a trip around the market on those days. What is certain is that the Wawel castle routes, Krzysztofory Palace, Schindler's Factory and the Rynek Underground (all part of Muzeum Krakowa) and the Wieliczka Salt Mine are all closed on 24 and 25 December. On 26 December the salt mine is open from 9:00 to 17:00, which makes it a good day for a trip out of the city.

What can you eat and buy at the Kraków Christmas market, and how much does it cost?

The organiser lists grilled dishes, oscypek (a smoked mountain cheese) grilled and served with cranberry, and grzaniec galicyjski, a Galician mulled wine. For something sweet there are caramelised roasted nuts, treats in chocolate and marzipan, and traditional gingerbread.

Prices for 2026 will be known once the stalls open. The Polish Press Agency reported these in the last two seasons:

PAP does not say whether the 2024 and 2025 prices are for the same products from the same stalls, so read them as a guide to what a meal costs, not as a price trend. In 2025 marked stalls gave 20% off food only to holders of the Karta Krakowska residents' card. For what to order beyond the market, see our guide to Polish food in Kraków.

For gifts, the organiser lists hand-painted baubles and other tree ornaments, ceramics, things made of wood, wool and cloth, art glass and jewellery. The city's description of the 2025 market adds candles, hand-embroidered tablecloths, nativity scenes, wooden toys, leather goods and regional sheepskin coats.

Which other Christmas markets are there in Kraków in 2026?

Two more Christmas fairs run by IMAGO Folk Art Centre open in the Old Town on 30 November 2026.

MarketWhereDates
Christmas market on the Main Market Square (main market)Rynek Główny; last season by the Town Hall Tower27 November 2026 to 3 or 6 January 2027

IMAGO Christmas fair, first editionSt Mary Magdalene Square, on Grodzka Street30 November 2026 to 3 January 2027

On Mały Rynek, IMAGO has invited makers of tree ornaments, ceramics and art glass, wreaths, candles, things made of wood, paper and textiles, jewellery, toys and prints. Last season this fair included workshops on the Kraków szopka. The new fair on St Mary Magdalene Square stands by Grodzka Street, next to Kanonicza Street and on the way from the Main Market Square to Wawel, with a limited number of stalls so that the square stays open to view. If you walk on to the castle, our Wawel Castle visitor guide will help you choose a route.

When is the Kraków szopka contest 2026, and where can you see the nativity scenes?

The 84th Kraków Szopka Contest is on Thursday 3 December 2026 on the Main Market Square, and the entries are on show in Krzysztofory Palace, Rynek Główny 35, from 9 December 2026 to 28 February 2027. Szopki are Kraków's nativity scenes, and in 2018 UNESCO inscribed the "Nativity scene (szopka) tradition in Krakow" on its Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

  • 10:00 to 12:00: the makers set out their szopki at the Adam Mickiewicz monument on the Main Market Square. Come before noon to see them up close.
  • 12:00: a procession carries the szopki around the square, and they are then taken into Krzysztofory Palace, by 14:00.
  • 6 December 2026, 14:00: results in the adult and youth categories and for the "OFF" szopki, in the Copper Hall of Krzysztofory Palace.
  • From 9 December 2026: the 84th post-contest exhibition in Krzysztofory Palace, until 28 February 2027.

The contest and the exhibition are organised by the Historical Museum of the City of Kraków, known as Muzeum Krakowa. Last season the exhibition was open every day from 9:00 to 18:00, with shorter hours on some days in December and January, and closed on 24 and 25 December and 1 January. Tickets cost 30 PLN, 24 PLN reduced, 60 PLN for a family and 10 PLN on Mondays. For 26 December the museum lists the szopka exhibition from 10:00 to 19:00 and for 31 December from 9:00 to 15:00, without giving a year; on 24 and 25 December Krzysztofory Palace is closed.

When is the Christmas tree on the Main Market Square lit?

The city will set the date for switching on the tree and the lights on the Main Market Square; last season the tree was lit on Saturday 6 December 2025 at 17:00, with a concert on the stage next to St Mary's Basilica.

This winter brings new decorations, chosen by the city's roads authority, ZDMK, for three seasons. According to KRKnews, the tree on the Main Market Square will be a natural conifer at least 15 metres tall. Light arches inspired by St Mary's Basilica will hang over the streets, 46 decorations are planned over six Old Town streets, among them Grodzka and Floriańska, and Piłsudski Bridge will get a "starry sky". The lights go up between 12 November and 1 December and stay until the end of January.

How do you spend a December day in Kraków? A plan hour by hour

Plan the sights for the morning and the market for the evening: on 21 December 2026 the sun rises at 7:36 and sets at 15:40, giving you 8 hours 4 minutes of daylight. Dress for frost. In December Kraków averages -0.5°C, with average highs of 2.7°C and lows of -3.4°C (IMGW climate normals 1991-2020).

YourKrakow is a Kraków tour company: we run private electric cart tours of the Old Town and Kazimierz, and day trips from Kraków with hotel pickup. This is the December day we would suggest to a friend:

  • 9:00 to 12:00 Wawel. When we checked, the castle's first and second floors opened from Tuesday to Sunday from 9:00 to 17:00; December hours are on wawel.krakow.pl. Or swap the morning for the salt mine: our Wieliczka Salt Mine tour from Kraków picks you up at your hotel.
  • 12:00 lunch at the market: żurek, grilled oscypek with cranberry or a zapiekanka.
  • 13:00 to 14:30 the szopka exhibition in Krzysztofory Palace, on the square itself (from 9 December).
  • 14:30 to 15:40 a slow walk down Grodzka Street to the fair on St Mary Magdalene Square, and back via Mały Rynek, as the light goes.
  • About 16:00 choose your evening: our heated electric cart through the Old Town (about 40 minutes, past the market), the Rynek Underground museum beneath the square (to 20:00 from Friday to Sunday, to 19:00 on Wednesday and Thursday and to 15:00 on Tuesday when we checked), or Schindler's Factory (to 20:00 from Tuesday to Sunday when we checked, last entry an hour and a half before closing).
  • 18:00 to 20:00 back at the market for mulled wine and the last shopping before the stalls close.

On Mondays the first floor of Wawel Castle is closed and Schindler's Factory closes at 15:00, so the plan works best from Tuesday to Sunday. The Rynek Underground is closed on 14 December, the second Monday of the month. Muzeum Krakowa also lists 18 December, without a year, as a day when Krzysztofory Palace, Schindler's Factory and the Rynek Underground close at 14:00. For the rest of your stay, see Kraków in winter and whether Kraków is worth visiting in December, and for clothing, our month-by-month packing guide.

What is open in Kraków over Christmas and New Year?

On 25 December all the museums in the table below and the salt mine are closed, and the organiser has not yet said whether the market stalls will open. On 26 and 31 December the Wieliczka Salt Mine, the Auschwitz-Birkenau Museum, Krzysztofory Palace, Schindler's Factory and the Rynek Underground are open, while at Wawel the first floor is closed on both days, the second floor on 26 December and the underground on 31 December.

Muzeum Krakowa gives the hours for 26 and 31 December without a year, so they may still change. On 26 and 31 December the mine also runs the Miners' Route from 9:00 to 15:00, according to its ticket calendar.

If 26 or 31 December is your free day, the salt mine is the obvious choice. We run a Wieliczka Salt Mine tour from Kraków with private transport and hotel pickup; ask about your date when you book, and we will confirm whether we can go that day.

Salt Mine Wieliczka

The Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial and Museum, at the site of the former German Nazi concentration and extermination camp, is open every day of the year except 1 January, 25 December and Easter Sunday. In December a visit can start between 7:30 and 14:00, and in January between 7:30 and 15:00, and you can stay for an hour and a half after the last start time. If you would like to travel there with us between Christmas and New Year, ask about your date for our Auschwitz-Birkenau tour from Kraków.

Is there a New Year's Eve party in Kraków in 2026, and are fireworks allowed?

The city has not announced a New Year's Eve event on the Main Market Square for 2026; last year it held no large party there, and Kraków's cultural institutions put on their own New Year's Eve programmes instead, with tickets selling very fast, according to LoveKraków. The first ones are already listed: on 31 December 2026 Teatr Groteska has a show for children at 16:00 and an evening for adults from 20:00, and the Słowacki Theatre has performances at 19:00. Book early.

Fireworks are not banned in Kraków. The city council's year-round ban from November 2025 was annulled by the Voivodeship Administrative Court in Kraków on 30 June 2026, the city did not appeal, and according to RMF24 the ban no longer applies.

What is not announced yet (as of 24 October 2026)

  • The final market dates for visitors and the date of the opening ceremony; the city has not yet published this season's notice.
  • Opening hours for visitors (only the rules for traders give 10:00 to 20:00), and whether the stalls trade on 24, 25 and 26 December and 1 January.
  • 2026 food prices at the market and the hours of the two IMAGO fairs.
  • Daily hours and ticket prices of the 2026/2027 szopka exhibition; last season's hours for 26 and 31 December (10:00 to 18:00 and 10:00 to 15:00) differ from those the museum now lists.
  • The date the tree is lit and any New Year's Eve programme, including night public transport.
  • Opening on 1 January 2027 at Wawel, Krzysztofory Palace, Schindler's Factory and the Rynek Underground; tickets and hours for 1 January 2027 at the Wieliczka Salt Mine.

We will update this guide as the organisers publish.

Want snow as well?

Kraków gets snow on the ground on 11.9 days in December on average, so if you want white mountains with your Christmas market, go to Zakopane, about 2 hours south. Our guide to Zakopane in winter from Kraków covers what to do there without skis. The easiest way is our private Zakopane day trip with thermal baths: 850 PLN per person, with hotel pickup in Kraków, sightseeing in Zakopane, a highland cheese tasting and tickets for the thermal pools included.

Where exactly is the Christmas market in Kraków?

On the Main Market Square (Rynek Główny), in the centre of the Old Town. Last season the stalls stood on the side of the square by the Town Hall Tower.

Is there anything for children at the Kraków Christmas market?

In 2025, for the first time, a Venetian carousel for children stood by the Town Hall Tower; children with the residents' Karta Krakowska rode for 5 PLN, and the city did not give the price for others.

Has the Kraków Christmas market been recommended by international media?

Yes. The city writes that The Times and CNN have encouraged readers to visit it among Europe's most interesting Christmas fairs, and the organiser recalls that in 2012 CNN Travel named Kraków the best place to spend Christmas.

Does it snow in Kraków in December?

Sometimes. According to IMGW climate normals for 1991-2020, snow covers the ground on 11.9 days in December on average, and December brings 33.4 mm of precipitation.

Do trams and buses run on Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve?

Last season MPK announced special timetables from 22 December to 6 January: on Christmas Eve some lines stopped around 16:30 or 17:00, on Christmas Day and New Year's Day some started only around 13:30 or 14:00, and on New Year's Eve the night trams ran as on weekend nights. Check mpk.krakow.pl in December.

When are Kraków's Christmas lights taken down?

The decorations stay up until the end of January, and are to be taken down by 15 February.

Are there security barriers around the Kraków Christmas market?

In 2025 the city announced temporary concrete barriers around the market and the square to stop unauthorised vehicles from driving in.
