How the day is organised

Wieliczka Salt Mine with a licensed guideIn the afternoon a licensed guide takes you along the Tourist Route: carved salt chambers, underground brine lakes and the Chapel of St. Kinga.
Private transport all dayFrom your hotel in the morning, between both sites and back to Kraków in the evening. No buses or trains to arrange.
One price for the whole day850 PLN per person covers the transport, both entry tickets and both guided visits.

Two very different places in one day

One is a place of memory, the other an underground monument to centuries of work. Both are on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial

The former German Nazi concentration and extermination camp. You visit both Auschwitz I, with the museum exhibitions, and the vast grounds of Birkenau.

Wieliczka Salt Mine

Salt was mined here for more than 700 years. The Tourist Route leads through chambers, lakes and chapels carved in salt, down to 135 m.

Before you go

Practical things for both visits.

ID

Bring your passport or ID. Auschwitz entry passes are issued by name and are checked together with an identity document.

Bags

Only bags up to 35 x 25 x 15 cm are allowed at the Memorial. Larger bags go into paid lockers, so travel light for the whole day.

Comfortable shoes

About 3 km outdoors at the Memorial and about 3.5 km underground in the mine, with roughly 800 steps. Flat shoes with good grip are best.

Layers

Birkenau is open to sun, wind and rain, and the mine stays at 17 to 18 °C all year. Dress in layers.

Photography

Allowed for private use in most places. At the Memorial it is forbidden in the hair exhibition (Block 4) and the basement of Block 11.

Age

The Memorial recommends that visitors be aged 14 and over.

Good to know

  • The morning is a visit to a place of memory and mourning. It is calm and respectful, and the drive to Wieliczka gives you time to take it in.
  • The order is fixed: Auschwitz-Birkenau first, the salt mine in the afternoon.
  • Eating is not allowed on the Memorial grounds. There is a cafe at the visitor centre, and an underground cafe in the mine.
  • It is a long day. If you have more days in Kraków, each visit can also be booked on its own.

Who is this tour for?

A great fit if you

  • Have only a few days in Kraków and want to see both places
  • Are an adult, or travelling with teenagers aged 14 and over
  • Prefer transport, tickets and guides arranged in one booking
  • Can manage a full day with plenty of walking

Perhaps reconsider if you

  • Are travelling with children under 14 (the Memorial's guidance)
  • Cannot manage around 800 steps in the mine or 3 km on uneven ground
  • Would rather take each visit slowly, on a separate day

Who guides you

At the Memorial your visit is led by an educator accredited by the Auschwitz-Birkenau Museum, who gives the historical context and the stories of individual people. In the Wieliczka Salt Mine a licensed mine guide leads you along the Tourist Route and explains how miners worked the salt for 700 years.

Frequently asked questions

Can you visit Auschwitz and the Wieliczka Salt Mine in one day?

Yes. We visit the Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial in the morning and the Wieliczka Salt Mine in the afternoon; the two sites are about 80 km apart. It is a long day: plan on about 11 hours from hotel pickup to drop-off in Kraków.

How much is the Auschwitz and salt mine tour from Krakow?

850 PLN per person. That covers private transport for the whole day with hotel pickup and drop-off in Kraków, named entry passes to the Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial with a visit led by a Museum educator, and the Wieliczka Salt Mine ticket with a licensed guide. You can pay in cash or by card.

Which comes first, Auschwitz or the salt mine?

Auschwitz-Birkenau comes first. Entry passes to the Memorial are issued for a set time and the visit with a Museum educator takes about 3.5 hours, so we plan the day around it. The salt mine follows in the afternoon.

Is it too much for one day?

It is a full day, and the two places are very different: a place of memory and an underground salt mine. It suits visitors with only a few days in Kraków. If you have more time, you can also book each tour on a separate day.

Can children take part?

The Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial recommends that visitors be at least 14 years old, so this tour is for adults and teenagers aged 14 and over.

How much walking is there?

About 3 km at the Memorial, mostly outdoors on uneven ground, and about 3.5 km with roughly 800 steps in the salt mine. At the end of the mine visit a lift brings you back to the surface.

What should I bring?

Your passport or ID, because the Auschwitz entry passes are issued by name; a small bag, as only bags up to 35 x 25 x 15 cm are allowed at the Memorial; comfortable shoes; and a light jacket for the mine, which stays at 17 to 18 °C all year.

Is lunch included?

No. We stop for a lunch break between the two visits; meals and drinks are paid separately.
