Before you go

A few practical things worth knowing before you head underground.

Comfortable shoes

You cover about 3 km on the Tourist Route, on stone floors and stairs that can be uneven or slippery. Flat, closed shoes with grip are ideal.

Bring a layer

The mine holds a constant 17 to 18 C all year. It feels cool after a warm day above ground, so bring a light jacket or sweater.

Lots of stairs

The route begins with around 380 steps down the shaft, and involves roughly 800 stairs in total across the visit. There are no stairs on the way out: a lift brings you back up.

Photography

Photos for personal use are allowed on the Tourist Route, so you can capture the salt chambers and St. Kinga's Chapel.

Food & shop

There is an underground cafe and a shop selling salt lamps and souvenirs. Meals are not included in the tour.

Accessibility & the lift

The visit involves a lot of stairs and is demanding for anyone with limited mobility. A lift returns everyone to the surface, and adapted visits can be arranged if you tell us your needs when booking.

Who is this tour for?

A great fit if you

  • Want to see one of the world's oldest salt mines and a UNESCO World Heritage Site
  • Enjoy history, geology and jaw-dropping human-made spaces
  • Are travelling with family: the mine welcomes children of all ages
  • Prefer a small, unhurried group with a licensed guide

Perhaps reconsider if you

  • Cannot manage around 380 steps down and 3 km of walking underground
  • Are strongly claustrophobic or uneasy in enclosed underground spaces
  • Are looking for a quick, casual stop rather than a half-day trip

Meet your guide

Your visit is led by a licensed, English-speaking guide who knows the Wieliczka Salt Mine inside out. Their job is not just to walk you through the chambers but to explain what you are seeing: how miners cut salt from the rock for 700 years, how the underground lakes and the great Chapel of St. Kinga came to be, and why the mine earned a place on the very first UNESCO World Heritage List in 1978. Tours are conducted in English.

Full details & FAQ

About this tour

Just 14 km from Kraków's Market Square lies one of the most extraordinary places on earth. The Wieliczka Salt Mine has been continuously excavated since the 13th century, making it one of the oldest salt mines in the world. In 1978 it was among the first sites inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List - and once you descend into its depths, you will understand why.

Our licensed guide leads you through a curated route of the mine's most spectacular highlights: nine levels of shafts and chambers stretching over 245 km of tunnels. You'll walk through crystalline salt grottos, stand beside underground lakes whose still surfaces mirror the carved salt formations above, and marvel at the extraordinary Chapel of St. Kinga - a vast underground cathedral with salt chandeliers, altarpieces, and bas-reliefs carved entirely from salt rock by mining artists over 67 years.

Entry tickets are included in your tour price. The mine maintains a constant temperature of 17-18°C year-round, making it a refreshing retreat in summer and a warm escape in winter. Wear comfortable walking shoes and bring a light jacket.

Frequently asked questions

Is it cold inside the mine?

Yes - the mine maintains a constant 17-18°C (57°F) year-round. Bring a light jacket or layer. It's refreshing in summer but can feel cool in winter.

Is the mine accessible for people with mobility issues?

The standard tourist route involves 800 stairs downward. There is a lift available for those with mobility limitations, but some sections involve uneven surfaces. Please inform us when booking.

How deep does the tour go?

The tourist route goes down to 135 metres (Level III). You descend by stairs and return to the surface by lift at the end of the tour.

Can I combine this with the Tatra or Auschwitz tour?

The Salt Mine tour is a half-day, so it can be combined with an afternoon in Kraków. We don't recommend combining it with Auschwitz on the same day - both experiences deserve their own full attention.
